Those final levels were intended for an expansion, which the developers are now proudly teasing with a Q2 2019 target launch as well as a trailer. In fact, the remake just stops short of Freeman being teleported to the alien world. However, Half-Life wouldn’t be complete without that Xen level and neither is the Black Mesa remake. That refers both to the aliens’ homeworld as well as the game’s last levels, which has gone down in history as a shoddy rushed job compared to the rest of the levels.
While the reception of Half-Life has been mostly positive, the game had one huge wart on its face, a wart that had the name “Xen” written all over it. It chronicles the adventures and misadventures of the almost iconic Gordon Freeman, a theoretical physicist who is forced to take up arms to fight an alien invasion. I'd probably add a touch more of life to it as well.Like most first-person shooters, Half-Life’s plot may take a back seat to all the action but it definitely has one. To give the feeling that it's a weird and twisted version of our reality. Style-wise, I would keep it relatively the same, except have its terrain match Earths more. It also would be a cool way to explain how the combine get to Earth, because they have to be able to link up with xen (the universe between the combine universe and ours) in order to get here. I would create it as a sort of in-between "world", which is located in the unknown space between where you are teleporting from and where you are teleporting to.įor me, that would make sense, because it does not seem to have a defined structure and anything is possible in terms of physics and life.
So in my mind, when you teleported to xen, you were merely teleporting to a position on the Earth, except in a parallel dimension. So it was kinda like Earth, except in another strange dimension where physics doesn't make sense and what we know as reality breaks down.Ĭoincidentally, kinda like the "up-side down" in the show Stranger Things, except more alive. When I was a child and first played HL1, I always thought of xen as a literal border world. It has a ton of weird life in it, both fauna and flora.
